And Hello from Me!
« on: June 20, 2019, 09:51:16 AM »
Another newbie: I would have posted a couple of days ago, but just found my approval lurking in my spam folder this morning!

I bought a 81 special a few weeks ago, so no doubt will need help and advice on a whole range of issues as I get to know it better! Having said that, it is very tidy and original - still has the centre stand, exhaust system and even tool kit - and seems to be mechanically very sound. I have replaced the front mudguard, indicators and rear light, but otherwise just tinkering and servicing. It handles better than I expected, but my expectations weren't high! It seems to cope with corners or bumps, but not both at the same time. Living in the fens, we have a lot of bumpy roads, but I guess I'll get used to it.

Once I have worked out how to attach a picture, I'll post one of the bike.

Welcome.
A lot of folk find the XS handles better two up over the bumps and corners. A picture or two would be nice.

Interesting thought... But don't you need 'members' for a 'Club'..?

If you can't bleed your bike's brakes then you can't have a bike.

XS1100 - it's old fookin' hat.

I am struggling to get a photo up via photobucket. Even a greatly reduced image (at source) comes up massive in the preview. I have posted on faceache, for those of you who use that.

Stolen. Nice looking bike. Wide bars.

That's it - thanks! Just need to sort out an avatar next....

The bars were the least standard thing on it when I bought it. I'm pretty short, and lean too far forward with them fitted, so I have replaced them with a pair I had lying round the garage that are closer to the originals. Unfortunately, the master cylinder fouls the bars if I have them rotated to their most comfortable height, so they are higher than I would like. Still more comfortable than the bars in the photo, but the jury is still out.

If you can find a pair of handlebars from a USA 1981 XS1100H (Venturer), they are pull back bars and reach further back than the bars in the picture.
The down side is, it'll require you to use longer throttle and clutch cables and front brake hoses.

Diesel - thanks - it is certainly a lot of bike for the money! It is growing on me: I have been riding bikes for over 40 years and this is the first one with more than 2 cylinders I have owned. I am used to shaft drive, having owned various Guzzis, but I was surprised how clunky and notchy the gearbox was. A combination of changing oil and getting used to it has made changing gear a lot smoother. Fiddling with the suspension settings has also improved the handling, so I think I'll hang on to it for a while longer!

Wow that's a pretty XS.
Not many original exhausts in that condition.
