1100E fuel tank cap won't open
« on: March 17, 2019, 07:38:55 PM »
Any hints on how to open a gas cap on an 1100E fuel tank when the key stops opening it?  It was working great for years.  Now the key turns 1/4 turn clockwise with no resistance which means the mechanism is no longer engaging the two spring loaded fingers.  It doesn't make any difference if you try the key while sitting normally, or while pushing the cap down (gasket is spring loaded).  Thx, Glen

Don't push the key in all the way and then try turning it but also not all the way.

Interesting thought... But don't you need 'members' for a 'Club'..?

Figured it out.  Made a special tool out of stiff wire that passed under the gas cap through the side gap, leveraged on the screw head holding the chrome pan, and pushed against the spring loaded finger.  It pushed it open while slightly pushing down on the gas cap, allowing it to become unhooked.  Problem solved.  Disassembled the mechanism, replaced the defective part, and back in business.
